We left beautiful Baltimore and departed from BWI at 2:45
on Sunday, May 17. It was only an hour and half in the sky before we landed in
Charleston. After boarding our minivans, we headed to downtown Charleston and
our 17-person party tried to get a table at Jestines, a classic southern
restaurant on the corer of Meeting and Society. After a dinner of mashed potatoes, fried
chicken, cornbread, and fried green tomatoes, and my first taste of sweetened southern
iced tea, we split up and walked through King Street and the open-air market,
and made our way to the waterfront. By 8:30 pm, we made our way to the Habitat
houses, unpacked, made our beds, and settled in for the night.
